Cherie Beckett BSc, LIBMS
Specialist Biomedical Scientist, The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust
I was delighted to be invited back again to chair the IBMS Congress Student Event, as much of what I do, both in- and outside of work, is to try to raise the profile of the profession and inspire our next generation of Biomedical Scientists and the like.
I most notably pioneered the #IBMSChat initiative back in 2018, whereby likeminded science enthusiasts come together on the first Wednesday of every month on Twitter (8pm) to discuss a loosely set topic. From this, a strong and inclusive network has blossomed, providing a 24/7 online platform for CPD, advice, support and so much more, free from the traditional boundaries of geography, hierarchy, specialism, stage of career or knowledge-base.
At work, I am a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in a diagnostic clinical Microbiology laboratory, with a particular flair for Virology. Most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic afforded me an opportunity to step up and join our Trust’s Incident Management Team / Infection Prevention and Control cell, allowing me to consider the wider picture, as well as assisting in the co-ordination of local testing protocols in the laboratory and I have really enjoyed the additional responsibility.
