Cherie is a Senior Biomedical Scientist in an NHS diagnostic, clinical Microbiology laboratory, in a district general hospital. She has 14 years laboratory experience. She is also an Associate Lecturer on the BSc Biomedical Science degree at Anglia Ruskin University. Cherie is passionate about training and helping the future generation of Biomedical Scientists and as such, much of her voluntary work with the IBMS is a reflection of this. Cherie is a committed IBMS Verifier for the Registration Portfolio.

A 2nd year undergraduate student studying Human Biology and Infectious diseases at the University of Salford. Aiming to complete a master’s degree within clinical sciences and a PhD. Treasurer of the Salford Biomedicine Society and a main lead for many projects like our IBMS outreach kits for Biomedical science day, Bioscientist Magazine, Bioart club and Book Club. A powerful player within the society, striving to provide opportunities and positive energy to others. I teach young students out of hours, interacting with teenagers and enjoy watching Kdramas when I’m free. |
Michelle is Chief Biomedical Scientist at the Haematological Cancer Diagnostic Service at Manchester Foundation Trust, working alongside clinical and laboratory based colleagues to provide morphology reporting of blood and bone marrows.
Michelle also works with UK NEQASH to deliver the Digital Morphology Scheme for CPD and completed her Doctorate thesis based on the common types of error that occur when examining blood films. With 24 publications in peer reviewed journals Michelle remains passionate about the role Biomedical Scientists play in delivering a quality service to patients.

An award-winning editor who has spent the last decade writing and editing for a range healthcare and science magazine and academic journals. Rob edits the Biomedical Scientist magazine for the IBMS and has previously written and edited for the Guardian, the Independent, i-D and Dazed and Confused, among others. He hates exclamation marks – but likes a dash. |
Tahmina started her career in 2009 as a trainee Biomedical Scientist at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust where she worked her way up to a senior level position as Training Coordinator for the Pathology department, specialising specifically in Haematology and Blood Transfusion. Tahmina is an IBMS verifier and examiner for registration and specialist portfolios with qualifications in Training, Quality Management and Leadership and Management. Tahmina’s skills and knowledge has led her to become professionally registered as a Chartered Scientist and a Fellow member of the Institute of Biomedical Science. Tahmina also sits on the Registration Authority Committee with the Science Council and is an IBMS Council representative as well as a CPD Officer involved in public engagement activities to promote the profession.
After 12 years of practising as a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist, Tahmina is moving on to progressing her career in academia as a Lecturer in Biomedical Sciences with the intention to complete a PGCert and PhD at the University of Salford.
Martin Khechara is an Associate Professor for Engagement in science technology engineering and maths (STEM) at the University of Wolverhampton.
Martin is a microbiologist, researcher and educator who has an international profile for his work in higher education. He is also a science communicator, presenter, writer, comedian, director and science theatre performer who believes in that study at university can change lives.
He is a champion of social change and actively works in the community to bring the magic of STEM subjects to those that need it the most.
Wendy Leversuch is a Biomedical Scientist, initially specialising in Haematology & Blood Transfusion before moving into the field of education and training.
Wendy has worked as a training officer in the laboratory, as the Deputy Head of Education at the IBMS before moving to Sonic Healthcare UK which provides pathology services across 20 sites to both the NHS and private sector as the Head of Learning and Development.
Wendy’s current area of interest is in how the use of e-learning can be used to support laboratory training. A recent example was the successful use of instructional videos as part of a training program for staff recruited to work in the new Covid-19 surge lab.

Charles is a pro-active student studying Human Biology and Infectious Disease. He is passionate about genetics, genetic disorders, and the contributions of biotechnology in disease therapeutics. As a student with autism, he has overcome many challenges and is involved in an array of volunteering. Some of the roles he has done throughout his educational development have been a young person’s governor at his local hospital, a Secretary and events manager with the Biomedicine Society, a commissioning editor for the Bioscientist Magazine, a secondary science tutor, LGBT+ ambassador, a course representative and helps to raise money for charities such as KidScanUK. |
I completed my PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Manchester in 2011. After this I obtained 7 years of postdoctoral research experience investigating the mechanisms of fibrosis at the University of Manchester.
I secured my first position as Lecturer of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Salford just over 3 years ago. In addition to teaching and scientific research activities, I have secured several student experience enhancement grants and focused much effort in the area of enhancing student employability.
My findings in the area of student experience have led to Advanced HE and Times Higher Education publications and nominations.

Aimee is currently working as a Senior Lecturer at Staffordshire University, where she is also studying for her Professional Doctorate in Healthcare Science. Aimee was previously employed as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Haematology & Transfusion at University Hospitals North Midlands, where she completed the validation of peritoneal dialysis fluid testing using the Advia 2120i as part of her MSc project.
I am a biomedical scientist registered with the Health and Care Professions Council, Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Science and the Chief Examiner in Virology.
After completing a BSc in Microbiology from Bristol University (this was before degrees in Biomedical Science were available). I trained as a Biomedical Scientist in the Virology department at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London. I have worked in hospital virology and microbiology laboratories in London, Bristol, Manchester, Liverpool and in Zimbabwe and Tajikistan.
I studied for a PhD in my mid-30s and am now a lecturer at the University of Brighton.
Sheri Scott is a Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Science and course leader for the BSc Applied Biomedical Science (Healthcare Science Apprenticeship) at Nottingham Trent University (NTU). She teaches Clinical Biochemistry and is module leader and lecturer for the Biomedical Science in practice and Professional practice undergraduate modules. Sheri works closely with the employability team at NTU to help prepare students for a career in Biomedical Science.
Sheri joined NTU in January 2018 after a career covering 22 years working in Clinical Biochemistry in NHS laboratories. Her previous roles include Senior Biomedical Scientist at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, Training lead in Blood sciences at Royal Derby hospital and a Biomedical Scientist at Nottingham City Hospital.
Sheri is a chartered scientist and registered HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist professional and is an active fellow member of the Institute of Biomedical Science. Her professional activities include assessor for the Science Council, IBMS Clinical Biochemistry advisory panel member, chief examiner of the higher specialist diploma, local CPD officer and verifier/assessor for the IBMS registration and specialist portfolios. She is also involved in the national STEM ambassador programme, promoting careers in science in schools.
Sheri’s myriad of professional activities and strong links with local hospitals provide continued professional insight, supporting students within Biosciences at NTU.
Francis is a Laboratory Manager and HSST Clinical Scientist, working in a paediatric specialist tertiary referral hospital. 14 years’ experience in Clinical Microbiology. Has keen interest in AMR and is completing a DClinSci (Doctor of Clinical Science) with thesis focusing on phenotypic and genotypic diagnostics to improve antibiotic prescribing and stewardship. Keen on research and translating diagnostic research for use in diagnostics and clinical management of patients.
