Leadership doesn’t have to be lonely
9am – 9.30am BST, 24 September 2025 ‐ 30 mins
Laboratory Management
Abstract
Students in the Leadership and management CEP often comment how the manager role is lonely or that they feel it is and would feel daunted in that situation. "It's tough at the top" and "the buck stops here". I also felt very alone when in my first management role. This stemmed from a certain amount of imposter syndrome, feeling I had to deal with and fix everything myself and not being aware of any potential support.
This session intends to make it clear that leadership and management is not about being lonely, or isolated or responsible for everything that turns up. It seeks to offer ways of affirmation of your right to be in the role and develop the key qualities of resilience and assertiveness. There will be thoughts on developing a strong circle of supporters within and outside Pathology and practical tips for day-to-day issues.
This session is useful for those in senior and management roles and for those with thoughts of moving into these roles including courses and qualifications.

Laboratory Management
Abstract
While advanced clinical practice is now viewed as the attractive route for career progression in pathology, management and leadership roles offer an equally vital and fulfilling pathway. This session will focus on the importance of supporting and developing individuals who aspire to lead laboratories rather than remain in purely clinical roles. We will explore how to identify leadership potential, the skills required for effective lab management, and how structured development programmes can equip future leaders for the challenges ahead.
By highlighting real-life examples and sharing practical guidance, this session aims to inspire a broader view of career progression—where leadership is not just an alternative, but a valued and essential option.

Laboratory Management
Abstract
The healthcare landscape continues to evolve, effective leadership extends far beyond formal positions and job titles. Beyond Roles: The Art of Navigating Leadership Traits and Behaviours challenges the traditional view of leadership by exploring how self-awareness, emotional intelligence and adaptability are critical to influencing positive change from any role in an organisation. This presentation draws on real-world examples that can be applied to laboratory settings and practices to illustrate strategies for developing high-performing teams, cultivating inclusive cultures and leading innovative transformation across all levels.
A unique focus of this session is understanding and navigating the impact of the "Dark Triad"—the constellation of narcissism, machiavellianism and psychopathy which can subtly undermine morale, trust and team dynamics if left unchecked. Participants will gain practical insights into identifying and constructively responding to these destabilising traits, as well as fostering robust feedback systems, psychological safety and strong values-based cultures.
Attendees will leave equipped with more clarity to assess and strengthen their own leadership approach, navigate complex interpersonal dynamics and contribute meaningfully to organisational success, truly embodying the spirit of leadership that goes beyond conventional roles and hierarchies.

Laboratory Management
Leadership wellbeing is about cultivating an environment of care — not only for those around us, but also for ourselves. When leaders prioritise their own wellbeing, it positively impacts communication, productivity, and overall team performance. More importantly, it plays a vital role in staff retention by helping individuals feel seen, valued, and empowered to bring creativity into their roles.
This workshop explores the importance of self-reflection in recognising personal obstacles and how developing the ability to pause before reacting can foster healthier responses. Through discussion and practical activities, participants will gain simple, effective tools to support their own wellbeing and take back ideas to encourage a more mindful and compassionate culture within their teams.

Laboratory Management
Abstract
In this interactive workshop we will explore how our organizations are increasingly composed of individuals from diverse cultural, ethnic, gender, generational, and socio-economic backgrounds. Ensuring inclusivity within such a multi-diverse workforce is not only a moral imperative but also a strategic advantage that allows for innovation and enhanced employee engagement. The session will consider key strategies for fostering an inclusive work environment, such as leadership commitment, bias training, and the creation of safe spaces for dialogue, where all employees feel respected, valued, and empowered to contribute to their fullest potential.

Professional curiosity: a statutory obligation that could save a life
2pm – 3pm BST, 25 September 2025 ‐ 1 hour
Laboratory Management
Abstract
This interactive workshop will focus on professional curiosity being not just a good practice, but being a statutory duty in many sectors, especially those involved in safeguarding and public protection. We will look at how to ask the right questions, how to notice signs that something may be wrong, and not accepting information at face value. In our healthcare profession we have seen how a lack of curiosity can lead to missed warning signs and serious consequences, including harm or loss of life. The session will highlight how we remain alert, reflective, and inquisitive in our work and organisations and how to promote a culture that values curiosity, continuous learning, and open dialogue to strengthen our safeguarding systems.
