Abstract
Healthcare science roles continue to evolve, and apprenticeships offer an alternative pathway for individuals to access skill development and the workforce. This has benefits to the apprentices, existing staff and laboratory management. The use of apprenticeships supports widening participation through providing accessible (paid) learning pathways that help promote diversity and inclusion in the healthcare science workforce by creating opportunities for underrepresented groups, supporting career progression and addressing workforce shortages.
At Northumbria Healthcare we have staff across a wide range of pathology disciplines who are working and learning at all the different levels of healthcare science apprenticeship. This presentation will look at how we are utilizing these apprenticeships and provide a view on whether they deliver a worthwhile return on investment for both the apprentices, and for the laboratory. We will look into the challenges and opportunities provided.
Healthcare science apprenticeships are increasingly being recognized as an effective alternative to the more traditional academic routes into our profession. At Northumbria Healthcare we are finding that apprenticeships provide a valuable pathway for individuals to gain both practical skills and academic qualifications while working and earning. This does not mean that there haven’t been bumps in the road and lots of learning for everyone.
Learning outcomes
Delegates will understand:
- The impact on workforce development and how apprentices address skill shortages and support workforce sustainability.
- The costs involved in running pathology apprenticeships (e.g., training, supervision, and resources) versus the financial and operational benefits (e.g., reduced recruitment costs, quicker integration into teams, and filling critical skill gaps).
- The impact on Staff Morale and Team Dynamics - Understanding how pathology apprenticeships affect existing staff morale, including their role in fostering a culture of mentorship, collaboration, and shared knowledge.

Abstract
Professional qualifications are tailor-made for developing and progressing within the Biomedical Science profession. However, they also encompass a wealth of experiential learning and transferable skills development that are relevant and valued outside our immediate professional environment. The key is recognising the transferable elements gained from completing professional qualifications and articulating or demonstrating them in new environments. These skills can be effectively evidenced on a CV, enhancing career growth both within and outside of the biomedical science field.
